Keystation 49es Review I recently purchased the M-Audio Keystation 49es from Guitar Center. As always, Guitar Center's service was excellent. My order arrived intact and several days earlier than expected.
The controller is great! I recently purchased the M-Audio Keystation 49es from Guitar Center. As always, Guitar Center's service was excellent. My order arrived intact and several days earlier than expected. The controller is great! Lots of useful features including transport controls for your favorite DAW & extensive mapping capabilities, yet surprisingly easy to use. I tried it on 3 different DAWs (Studio One, FL Studio,& Ableton Live Lite), and in each case, it was only a few easy steps to get the virtual instruments & DAW software under control of the unit.
Install was quick & easy also, it's pretty much plug & play. Ableton Live Lite comes with the controller. Like most bundled software products, you only get a piece of paper with a real long number on it. You have to go to Ableton's site, download the software, then use that number to activate it. Ableton's site turned out to be very well laid out and user friendly.
I had the software downloaded, installed, and activated in no time. Live Lite turned out to be pretty nice also. While it has a low track count and limited mixing capabilities, it covers the basics extremely well.
Definitely capable of far more than scratchpad production. Registering the controller on M-Audio's site was where things went downhill. Everything's on poorly maintained drop-downs. The Dame Was Loaded Iso File there.
Serial #'s don't match products. Very little is current. It took 5hrs spread over 2 days and 2 calls to support to register the product. This company manufactures good quality products but the site & support need a lot of improvement.
When I finally got the controller registered I received free downloads of 2 virtual instruments, SONiVOX Eighty-eight ensemble, and AIR Music Technology Xpand!2. Eighty-eight is basically a virtual grand piano, one of the best I've heard btw! It sounds and even plays like the real thing.
Xpand!2 is a multi-timbral workstation. All I can say is. It's worth mentioning that both are full version, not lite or demo versions. The Keystation 49es alone is a deal for the money. All the extras make the deal a steal! Not full-size keys, but still useful The keys are not full-sized.
They are near full-size, but not quite. I have average size fingers, and it is difficult to play a white key between two black keys when you need. The keys are not full-sized.
They are near full-size, but not quite. I have average size fingers, and it is difficult to play a white key between two black keys when you need to press that white key near the top. The two black keys are too close together. So they keys are NOT full-size.
Honestly, I have to change my whole playing technique because of this miss-representation. This keyboard will get some use as it is portable and pretty much plug-n-play, just not as much use as I was hoping for because of the key size issue. All the extras make the deal a steal! Comments about M-Audio Keystation 49ES Black with Ableton Lite: I purchased the Keystation because I needed more keys for expression.
I also didn't want extra functions I wouldn't use like faders & buttons. After watching reviews I choose the Keystation. I previously owned the Akai MAX 25. The build qualities are day and night as far as weight of the units, feel of the keys & feel of the buttons. Compared to the Max the Keystation keys literally feel like plastic forks & spoons (Not saying it to be funny) to give my most honest opinion.
You also can't adjust the velocity curves with the keyboard. You'll have to do that inside your DAW. I also can't map my Transpose button like I wish I could in FL Studio. Maybe in others. To sum it up the Keystation is a you get what you pay for type keyboard. I doesn't have the most functions & is not the highest build quality but I'll get the job done.
