19 year old Dubliner, Rejjie Snow is set to break the ranks with his debut EP ‘Jelovich’ which drops today! Unfortunately, Rejjie’s first EP ‘Fish and Chips’ was deleted by a friend and never to be heard again! So for this, Rejjie has laid down 5 solid tracks on his debut EP, with his lucid bars over dark, heavy and unnerving production.
Rejjie could lazily be compared as ‘an Irish Tyler, The Creator’ due too his similar deep overtones. With a low tempo flow and at times, his dark content. People forget that before Tyler there were many a rapper who embraced and brought to life such delivery (though most recently Captain Murphy) whilst a comparison with Hodgy Beats’ production fosters similar characteristics on Rejjies album. As an Irish rapper, you’d be fooled into assuming that you’d be confronted with a thick accent and the occasional separatist sentiment.
Instead, Rejjie details hometown tales sometimes extenuating his voice and at other times moulding it around his sound. Something that may serve some initial resistance, but providing a truly unique and at times enriching quality. The opening track ‘Loveleen’ starts with a loop of ‘Money, Bitches, Hoes, Greed, Pussy, Lord knows’. A loop with this accumulation of rap-generic words would lead you to assume the worst as a long list of aspiring acts have all tried to regurgitate this wanna-be-baller/ gangster rapper lifestyle, spitting shoddy 16’s over two-step beats. However the track is a rejuvenated burst of originality for this content. The production is beautifully crafted and the bars are far from weak, with intricate wordplay and conceptual metaphors that begin to build Rejjie’s persona.
The Features from Jesse James and Loyle- Carner are formidable; they do not take the spotlight awake from Rejjie. Who further into the tape, shows a few more glimpses of his talent.
‘1992’ pays homage too Dre, 2pac, Biggie and Big L, giving a humble insight into how a boy from Dublin started rapping. The Rejovich EP is a statement. Certainly showing the capabilities of this new starlet, but without truly showing us his hand. ‘Jelovich’ if anything shows signs of experimentation long beyond the years of the Dublin youngster.
Though it’s not enough to form a consider opinion yet. The ominous overtones of his sound look destined for big things.
